The CFA Franc Faced With the advent of European Currency (THE EURO): Present and Future Challenges

Abstract

Since 1964, the CFA Franc has been pegged to the French Franc, having a fixed exchange rate. The advent of the Euro keeps the CFA franc in a very vulnerable position. This article examines the consequences of the introduction of the Euro on the CFA Franc. What will be the future of the CFA Franc, looking at its strategic importance to the CF A Franc zone countries?. It carefully analyses the importance of a common currency to both the European Col111Jlunity and the CFA Franc zone in the Sub-Saharan African Region. The article in the end summarizes the situation and makes necessary recommendations to policy makers especially in the CFA Franc zone
